School website design on laptop and mobile showing admission enquiry form and campus photos

A school website in 2027 needs 15 things to do its job: a clear home page, about and leadership pages, an admissions page with an online form, a fee page, academics, a facilities page, a real photo and video gallery, a notice board, contact details with a map, WhatsApp chat, online fee payment, parent and student login, the CBSE mandatory disclosure, a blog, and a careers page. It must load fast and work well on a mobile phone, because that is where most parents will open it. It should also be AI-powered, answering parents' questions instantly and showing up in Google and AI search. A website without these loses enquiries to the school down the road that has them.

Key takeaways

  • Your website is the first campus visit most parents make. They judge the school from it before they ever call.
  • Mobile matters most. Parents search for schools on their phones.
  • A website that is not updated looks like a school that is not cared for.
  • The admission enquiry form and WhatsApp button are the two most important features on the site.
  • Building the website is the easy part. Keeping it updated, secure and renewed every year is what most schools get wrong.

The website most parents see before they see your school

Think about how a parent finds a school today. A neighbour mentions your name. The parent types it into Google on their phone, usually late in the evening after the children are asleep.

What appears next decides whether they call you in the morning.

In the schools I visit, I see the same three situations again and again. Some schools have no website at all, only a Facebook page last updated two years ago. Some have a website that a relative's friend built five years back, which nobody in the school knows how to change, and which still shows the 2022 admission notice. And some have a website that looks fine on a computer but breaks on a phone, which is exactly where the parent is looking.

None of these schools is a bad school. But to a parent at 11 pm, the website is the school. If it looks neglected, the parent assumes the school is too.

This guide lists the 15 pages and features every school website should have, the mistakes that quietly cost admissions, and what a school should expect to pay to build and run one.

How a school website turned a late-night search into an admission

Let me share something that happened recently.

A friend of mine was looking for a school for his child here in Ludhiana. I suggested three or four good schools. He was busy all day, so he looked them up at night, once he was finally free.

On one school's website he found an online admission form. He filled it in, there and then.

The very next day, that school called him and invited him for a visit. They showed him around, answered his questions well, and he was convinced. His child took admission there.

Think about what happened. A form filled at night. A school that acted on it the next morning. One admission confirmed. The other schools on my list never even got a chance, because at that hour their websites gave him nothing to do.

That is what a school website really is: an admission tool, not a decoration. Features such as an online admission form, online fee payment, a WhatsApp chatbot and an instant enquiry button work for you while your office is closed. And the school that follows up the next morning is the one that gets the admission.

Does a small school really need a website?

Yes. Your website is your school's online brochure. It is the brochure every parent can open, at any hour, without visiting you.

Many school owners tell me, "We will make a website when the school grows." Others say, "We will make one when CBSE or the board makes it compulsory." Both have it the wrong way round.

A small school needs a website more than a big one. A big school already has a name that parents know. A small school has to earn that trust, and the first place a parent looks for it is online. Waiting for the school to grow before building a website is like waiting for customers before putting up a shop sign.

So think bigger. Whether your school has 100 students or 2,000, build the website now, and let it help you grow. Do not treat it as a box to tick only because a board asks for it.

What pages and features should a school website have?

Every school website needs these 15. The first ten are pages a parent reads. The last five are features that make the website work for the school.

Careers page

Not for parents, but for the teachers you want to hire

1. Home page

The home page has about five seconds to make an impression. Put three things above the fold: the school's name and a real photograph of your campus or students, one line on what makes you different, and two buttons, "Apply for Admission" and "Chat on WhatsApp". Add a pop-up banner during admission season. Everything else can sit lower down.

2. About and leadership

Parents want to know who is behind the school. Write a short history, your vision in plain words, and a message from the principal or chairman with a real photograph. Avoid paragraphs that could belong to any school, such as "we provide holistic education in a nurturing environment". Say something only your school can say.

3. Admissions page with an online form

This is the most important page on the site. List the classes open, the age criteria, the documents required, the process and the important dates. Then give parents a short online admission form that they can fill on a phone in two minutes. Every form submission should reach your admission team the same day. See our admission open notice formats for wording you can use.

4. Fee structure

Many schools hide their fees, hoping parents will call. Most parents simply move on to a school that shows them. Publish the full yearly fee class by class, or at least a range, along with what it includes. If you are a CBSE school, your fee structure must be published in the mandatory public disclosure anyway.

5. Academics

State the board and affiliation number, the subjects and streams offered, and how you teach: activity-based learning, labs, the Holistic Progress Card, remedial support. Add results for senior classes if they are good.

6. Facilities and safety

Show, do not list. A photograph of a clean science lab or a library with children in it does more than the word "well-equipped". Give safety its own section: CCTV, transport tracking, gate pass, female staff for younger children, first aid. Safety is the factor parents will not compromise on.

7. Photo and video gallery

Use real photographs of your own students, teachers and events. Parents recognise stock photos instantly, and they lose trust when they do. Organise the gallery by event and year, and add new albums after every function, sports day or trip. Short videos of classrooms and activities work especially well.

8. Notice board and news

A live notice board with dated updates tells parents the school is active. Use it for holidays, PTMs, exam dates and admission announcements. Remove old notices. A 2022 admission notice on a 2027 website is one of the most damaging things a parent can see.

9. Contact page with map

Give your full address with a landmark, an embedded Google Map, phone numbers, email, office timings and a simple query form. Make the phone number tappable on mobile so a parent can call with one touch.

10. Mandatory public disclosure

CBSE requires affiliated schools to publish a Mandatory Public Disclosure on their website, in the format CBSE prescribes, covering details such as affiliation, recognition, safety certificates, fee structure, staff and infrastructure. Keep it complete and current. Parents check it, and so does CBSE.

11. WhatsApp chat button

Most parents in India would rather send a WhatsApp message than fill a form or make a call. A floating WhatsApp button on every page captures enquiries that would otherwise be lost. Make sure someone at the school replies the same day.

12. Online fee payment

Let parents pay fees through the website with UPI, cards or net banking, with an instant receipt. It saves parents a trip to school and saves your office hours of counter work. Connected to school fee software, the payment is recorded automatically.

13. Parent, student and teacher login

A login area connects the website to your school ERP, so parents can see attendance, homework and results, and teachers can reach their work from anywhere. It turns the website from a brochure into something families use every week.

14. Blog

A blog helps your school appear when parents search for things like "best CBSE school near me" or "nursery admission age in Punjab". Post school achievements, event stories and helpful articles for parents. Two good posts a month is enough.

15. Careers page

Good teachers look at a school's website before applying. A careers page with current openings and an application form brings you better candidates and saves you agency fees.

What else does the website need behind the scenes?

  • Mobile-first design that works on every screen size
  • Fast loading, ideally within a few seconds on a mobile connection
  • SSL security, so the site shows as secure in the browser
  • An easy admin panel, so school staff can update notices and photos without calling a developer
  • Basic SEO: proper page titles, descriptions and a Google Business Profile linked to the site
  • Privacy policy and terms, especially because the site collects children's and parents' details

Who should control the website? Your school.

The website's admin panel must be fully dynamic, and the school must have its own access to it. Your staff should be able to edit any page, add a notice, upload a gallery, publish results or launch an admission campaign at any time, without asking the developer.

If you have to call someone every time you want to change a line, the website is not really yours. Everything should be in the school's hands.

What does an AI-powered school website mean?

In 2027, a school website should do more than display information. An AI-powered website:

  • Answers parents instantly. An AI chatbot on the website or WhatsApp replies to common questions about fees, timings, transport and the admission process, at any hour.
  • Captures every enquiry. Instant enquiry and admission forms make sure no interested parent leaves without a way to reach you.
  • Shows up where parents search. It is built for SEO and AEO (answer engine optimisation), so your school can appear in Google results and in answers from AI assistants when parents ask about good schools in your area.
  • Stays updated on its own. When the website is connected to your school ERP, notices, events and galleries added in the ERP appear on the website automatically.

10 school website mistakes that cost you admissions

Most of these mistakes are not about design. They are about neglect. A beautiful website that nobody updates loses to a simple one that is kept alive.

  1. It breaks on a phone. Text too small, buttons too close, images cut off. If a parent has to pinch and zoom, they leave.
  2. Old notices on the home page. Last year's admission notice or a holiday list from 2024 tells parents nobody is looking after the site.
  3. No admission form, or a form that goes nowhere. Enquiries land in an inbox nobody checks. The parent waits, hears nothing, and joins another school.
  4. No fee information at all. Parents who cannot find even a range often assume the school is too expensive and do not call.
  5. Stock photographs. Smiling children from a photo library who are clearly not your students. Parents notice, and trust drops.
  6. The phone number is hard to find. Hidden in the footer, written as an image, or not tappable on mobile.
  7. It is slow. Huge uncompressed photos and heavy sliders that take ten seconds to load on mobile data.
  8. Only the developer can change anything. Every small update needs a phone call and a wait, so updates stop happening.
  9. The domain or SSL expires. The site goes down, or the browser warns parents that it is "not secure". This happens more often than schools admit, usually because the renewal was in a former employee's email.
  10. The domain is not in the school's name. If the person who registered it leaves, the school can lose its own web address.

How to check your own school website in ten minutes

Open your website on your own phone, using mobile data rather than the school Wi-Fi, and answer these questions honestly.

  •  Did it load within a few seconds?
  •  Can I see the admission button without scrolling?
  •  Can I fill the admission form comfortably on this phone?
  •  Does the latest notice on the site belong to this month?
  •  Are the photos of our own students and campus?
  •  Can I call the school with one tap?
  •  Does the browser show the site as secure?
  •  Is the fee structure, or at least a range, visible?
  •  Is the mandatory public disclosure complete and current?
  •  Do I know when our domain and hosting are due for renewal, and whose name they are in?

Every "no" is a parent you may be losing without knowing it.

How much does a school website cost in India?

A school website in India usually costs between ₹10,000 and ₹1,00,000, depending on your requirements and the type of website you need.

  • A basic static website with a few fixed pages starts at around ₹10,000. It works as an online brochure, but your staff cannot update it easily.
  • A dynamic website with an admin panel, online admission form, fee payment, WhatsApp and ERP integration costs more, because it does much more.
  • A well-known or brand school that wants a special, exclusive design and custom features will pay at the higher end of the range.

Remember that the build is only one part. Every website also needs its domain, hosting and SSL renewed each year, and someone to maintain it. Ask about both before you decide.

Class ON builds AI-powered school websites at the best price for what is included. To see a demo, call 90237-90237 or 98143-65143.

What should the yearly maintenance include?

Ask any website company what happens after the website goes live. A proper annual maintenance contract (AMC) should cover:

  • Domain renewal, so your web address never lapses
  • Hosting renewal, so the site stays online
  • SSL renewal, so browsers keep showing the site as secure
  • Regular updates to keep the site current
  • Security monitoring against hacking and malware
  • SEO improvements, so parents keep finding you on Google
  • Performance checks, so the site stays fast
  • New features as the school's needs change
  • Daily automatic backups, so nothing is lost if something goes wrong

If a quote does not mention these, ask. A cheap website with no maintenance plan usually costs more in the end, when it goes down in the middle of admission season.

The must-ask question for every website vendor: "Do you integrate these?"

Most website quotes look similar on paper. The difference shows up in what the website can actually connect to. Ask every vendor whether these are included, and get the answer in writing.

24/7 support, a website management training session for your staff, and one year of annual maintenance

The training session matters more than it looks. Our aim is that your own office staff can post a notice or upload a gallery in a few minutes, without waiting for anyone.

The biggest advantage is the connection with the Class ON ERP. You enter something once, and it appears everywhere. Post a notice or upload an event gallery in the ERP, and it is published on your website automatically. Fees paid on the website are recorded in the fee system, and parents who log in see the same information as in the Parent App.

To see a Class ON school website demo, call 90237-90237 or 98143-65143, or book a free demo online.

Your website is open even when your school is closed

Your school gate closes at 3 pm. Your website is open all night, every night, including the hour when a parent finally sits down to compare schools.

It does not need to be expensive or fancy. It needs to load quickly on a phone, look like your real school, show this month's notices, and make it easy to ask a question or apply. Most of all, it needs someone to look after it every year.

Open your website on your phone tonight and look at it the way a new parent would. If you would not call the school after seeing it, neither will they.

Frequently asked questions

What pages should a school website have?

A school website should have a home page, about and leadership, admissions with an online form, fee structure, academics, facilities and safety, a photo and video gallery, a notice board, a contact page with a map, and the mandatory public disclosure. It should also have WhatsApp chat, online fee payment, parent and student login, a blog and a careers page.

How much does a school website cost in India?

A school website in India usually costs between ₹10,000 and ₹1,00,000, depending on requirements. A basic static website starts at around ₹10,000. A dynamic website with online admission, fee payment and ERP integration, or a custom design for a large brand school, costs more. Class ON builds AI-powered dynamic school websites at the best price; call 90237-90237 for a demo.

Why does a school need a website?

Most parents search for a school online before they call or visit. A website shows the school's facilities, fees, results and admission process at any hour, collects admission enquiries, takes fee payments and builds trust. A school without one, or with an outdated one, loses enquiries to schools that have a good website.

Is a website mandatory for CBSE schools?

CBSE requires affiliated schools to publish a Mandatory Public Disclosure on their website in the format CBSE prescribes, covering affiliation, certificates, fees, staff and infrastructure. In practice, every CBSE school needs a website that keeps this information complete and current.

What is included in a school website AMC?

A school website annual maintenance contract should include domain, hosting and SSL renewal, regular updates, security monitoring, SEO improvements, performance checks, new features and daily backups. Every Class ON school website comes with one year of maintenance included.

Can school staff update the website themselves?

They should be able to. A good school website has an admin panel that lets staff post notices, upload photos and edit pages without technical knowledge. Class ON includes a training session so the school's own staff can manage the website.

How can a school website help increase admissions?

A website helps admissions when it loads fast on mobile, shows real photos of the school, publishes fees and the admission process clearly, and makes it easy to apply online or ask a question on WhatsApp. Every enquiry it collects must then be followed up the same day.

Does a small school need a website?

Yes. A website is a school's online brochure, open to parents at any hour. A small school needs one even more than a large school, because it has to build trust with parents who do not know its name yet. Do not wait for the school to grow or for a board to make it compulsory.

What is an AI-powered school website?

An AI-powered school website answers parents' common questions instantly through an AI chatbot, captures every enquiry, is built for SEO and AEO so it appears in Google and AI search, and stays updated automatically through its connection to the school ERP.

Which is the best company in India for school website design?

Class ON is one of the leading school website design companies in India. Last year alone, Class ON created more than 500 school websites, including over 350 for CBSE schools, which makes it one of India's most trusted names for CBSE school website development. Every Class ON website is AI-powered, fully dynamic, SEO and AEO optimised and mobile-responsive, and it connects directly with the Class ON school ERP.
